# The trap that stops MTN and Vodacom eating Cell C’s lunch

**[TechCentral](https://daily.dev/sources/techcentral)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Cell C CEO Jorge Mendes argues that MTN and Vodacom are structurally reluctant to aggressively pursue MVNO hosting business because doing so would cannibalise their own retail bases, whereas Cell C, running on their networks rather than its own RAN, has no such conflict and now hosts 80-85% of South Africa's MVNO market. Cell C's wholesale revenue grew 20% to R1.76-billion with 1.2 million new MVNO subscribers, reaching 5.71 million lines. MTN is moving into a narrower wholesale pricing framework while Vodacom has only signalled intent. Pending legislation could force the two dominant operators to offer MVNO hosting regardless.</main>
