# The Unfolding Bankruptcy of iRobot: A Closer Look

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

iRobot, maker of Roomba vacuum cleaners, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will transfer all assets to Chinese supplier Picea Robotics. The company's decline followed a failed $1.7 billion Amazon acquisition blocked by regulators in 2024, intense competition from government-backed Chinese robotics firms like Ecovacs and Roborock, and U.S. tariffs up to 46% on Vietnamese manufacturing. Founded by MIT engineers in 1990 and having sold over 40 million devices, iRobot's stock fell from Amazon's $52 offer to around $4 per share. The transfer raises concerns about Chinese ownership of intellectual property and data from millions of connected home devices.

In a strategic yet somber development, iRobot, the pioneering company behind the Roomba vacuum cleaners, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. As part of the restructuring plan, all company assets will be transferred to Shenzhen-based Picea Robotics, a former supplier and lender, marking a new phase for the long-standing U.S. technology leader.

The downfall of iRobot unfolds against the backdrop of intense competition from more affordable rivals and a failed acquisition attempt by Amazon. Originally slated for a $1.7 billion purchase by Amazon, the deal was thwarted by regulators in 2024, concerned over big tech dominance rather than the potential merits of the merger itself.

Ex-CEO Colin Angle attributes iRobot's downfall not only to regulatory barriers but also to the company's struggle to compete with heavily government-supported Chinese robotics companies. These competitors, such as Ecovacs and Roborock, outpaced iRobot with significantly higher investments in research and development.

Founded in 1990 by MIT engineers, iRobot once dominated the home robotics sector, selling over 40 million devices globally. However, a series of market challenges, including U.S. tariffs as high as 46% on Vietnamese manufacturing, eroded its market share. Despite efforts to reinvent and cut prices across its product lines, iRobot's stock eventually dwindled to around $4 per share, a stark contrast to Amazon's earlier $52 offer.

The bankruptcy has sparked concerns regarding Chinese ownership of intellectual property and data gleaned from millions of Roombas operating in homes worldwide. This development highlights broader challenges facing U.S. robotics companies that struggle to keep pace without coordinated government support to match China's robust industry investment strategies.

While Picea Robotics plans to maintain iRobot's operations without customer service disruptions, the shift in ownership indicates significant changes in the global landscape of robotics and smart home technology.
