# The US added a record 20.2 GWh of battery storage in just 3 months

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

The US battery storage market added a record 20.2 GWh in Q2 2026, the biggest quarter ever. That brought first-half 2026 installations to 30.8 GWh, up 23% year over year, per SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. Utility-scale projects drove most of the growth, with Arizona adding a record 6.2 GWh, Texas 3.8 GWh, and California 3.6 GWh. Residential storage fell 27% year over year to 657 MWh, partly due to the removal of the federal 25D tax credit. Tesla also brought its third Megafactory online in Texas, capable of producing 50 GWh of Megapacks a year.

## Questions this post answers

### How much battery storage did the US add in Q2 2026?

The US added a record 20.2 gigawatt-hours of battery storage in Q2 2026, the largest quarterly total ever recorded. This brought first-half 2026 installations to 30.8 GWh, up 23% year over year. Utility-scale projects accounted for about 18 GWh of the quarter's total, supported by seven gigawatt-hour-scale projects across Arizona, California, and Utah.

### Why did US residential battery storage installations drop in 2026?

US home battery installations fell 27% year over year to 657 MWh in Q2 2026. The decline is attributed partly to the removal of the federal 25D residential clean energy tax credit and partly to homeowners rushing installations into 2025 before the incentive changed. Benchmark forecasts residential installations falling 16% for all of 2026 after jumping 56% in 2025.

### What is Tesla's third Megafactory and where is it located?

Tesla's third Megafactory came online in Texas during Q2 2026, with capacity to produce 50 GWh of Megapacks annually. The factory began shipping Megapacks containing domestically manufactured lithium iron phosphate cells, adding to US battery manufacturing capacity as grid-scale storage demand accelerates.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 126 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-29).

**TL;DR:** Commenters generally view the battery storage surge positively, with deep technical discussion on grid stability, frequency support, and how batteries complement (or outpace) gas peakers and pumped hydro, though many push back on overhyping the raw GWh figures relative to actual grid demand.

**Sentiment:** 55% positive · 35% mixed · 10% skeptical

**The case for**

- Batteries react within milliseconds and provide grid stability services like frequency support and ancillary services that gas peakers struggle to match.
- Pairing batteries with diesel generators or solar lets generators run at more optimal efficiency and reduces fuel waste.
- Deployment costs are falling and installation pace is accelerating, suggesting both capacity and distribution gaps will shrink over the next decade.

**The pushback**

- The raw capacity numbers are misleadingly small compared to US peak demand (just minutes to seconds of coverage) and storage/generation are unevenly distributed geographically.
- Current batteries are short-duration (1-2 hours) and can't achieve the reliability (four nines) needed for critical infrastructure like large data centers on their own.
- Reporting in power (MW) vs energy (MWh) terms is often conflated or misleading in media coverage of these stories.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): A large technical thread debates grid inertia, frequency synchronization, battery vs. gas/coal/pumped-hydro tradeoffs, and whether the headline numbers are impressive or trivial relative to total grid demand, with side tangents into geopolitics around China's energy mix.

**Hottest debate:** Whether battery storage numbers represent meaningful progress toward grid resilience or are still a drop in the bucket compared to total US power demand.

**Open questions**

- How much medium- to long-term (multi-day/seasonal) storage capacity has actually been installed, beyond short-duration batteries?
- What is the real-world utilization rate of grid batteries, and how should that be interpreted given their short discharge duration?
- Will permitting and transmission constraints, rather than battery costs, become the main bottleneck to further storage deployment?

**Highlights**

> It's nice to see more storage being added, but we have keep thr order of magnitude in mind: the peak electricity demand for the US is 750GW, so the added storage for the past 3 month corresponds to just 96 seconds of peak consumption. There's still a very long way to go !

> But we generally don't need to satisfy the peak with battery - peak US demand occurs while the sun is still up, in July, so you can satisfy a large chunk of that with solar still. The hard part is those ~4 hours after solar stops producing enough and it's still hot and people are still up. So what we need is several hours of about half the gap between {nuclear, wind, hydro} and peak. Remembering that we also use even non-pumped hydro as a form of storage, by drawing on it more in the periods just before and just after sunrise/sunset. For example, if you look at the energy production across PJM from two days ago: https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_fullsize/plain/did:plc:hiovtnl... (Using that b/c I run the bot and it's data I'm very familiar with. You can see similar patterns in CAISO but they've already got so much solar it's a little more messy/duck-curved by all of the behind-the-meter solar.) You can see hydro coming online from roughly 16:00 - 23:00. There's still a big gas peak that we'd need a lot of storage to shave, and you're right that it's a long way to go before we do that, but it's not quite as bad as "we need enough battery to satisfy 100% peak demand".

> Both assertions are false. Batteries react within milliseconds, and last 10-25 years (depending on chemistry and cycling). Australia had to reconfigure it's ancillary services market due to how fast battery storage reacts, for example (proven out with the Hornsdale Power Reserve).

> Having worked in the industry for a bit, the reason people talk about "MW of batteries" is because they're usually designed to deliver the capacity for a fixed number of hours. Earlier batteries would do 1 hour (so a battery would typically be 1MW/1MWh) and newer sites coming online are usually 2 hours (so 1MW/2MWh). As battery deployment grows the money is increasingly just in energy arbitrage, so there's a lot of pressure for longer duration storage. If you see a headline MW figure it's a safe bet that it's between 1-2x that in MWh.
