MIT Lincoln Laboratory marks its 75th anniversary with reflections from 10 staff members on key technology contributions to national security and society. Founded in 1951 to develop the SAGE air defense system, the lab has since pioneered military satellite communications, space surveillance (detecting Sputnik, tracking satellites), aviation safety systems, 193nm and liquid-immersion lithography that enabled continued chip miniaturization, IED countermeasures in Iraq and Afghanistan, airborne lidar and synthetic aperture radar for intelligence gathering, lunar laser communications (later used for Artemis II), biological threat detection, and cybersecurity capabilities for the U.S. Department of Defense and intelligence community.
