# There Is No Such Thing as an Edge Case. Or is there?

**[Byte Corner](https://daily.dev/sources/bytecorner)** · [@mbos](https://daily.dev/mbos) · 1 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

An opinion piece argues that the term 'edge case' is often misused to dismiss states software should actually handle. The core claim is that rarity isn't what matters — what matters is whether a given state is one the system is supposed to handle. Many so-called edge cases are really unstated assumptions that were never explicitly decided on, and treating them as rare exceptions lets teams avoid confronting design gaps.

## Content

"That's just an edge case."

Maybe.

But how unusual something is isn't really the important question.

The better question is:

Is this a state our software is supposed to handle?

If the answer is yes, it's part of the problem — regardless of how rarely it happens.

A lot of "edge cases" are really just assumptions that nobody has turned into explicit decisions yet.
