Thinking on different wavelengths: New approach to circuit design introduces next-level quantum computing

Researchers at The University of Osaka developed a power-efficient nanophotonic circuit design that delivers six different laser beams through optical fibers and waveguides to trapped ions in quantum computers. The approach uses creative waveguide patterns (bubble sort and blockwise duplication) to route multiple laser wavelengths in limited space, potentially enabling several hundred qubits on a single chip. This breakthrough addresses a key scalability challenge in trapped-ion quantum computing and may have applications in advanced optical systems beyond quantum computing.
