By sideloading WallPanel onto an Amazon Fire tablet and pointing it at a Home Assistant dashboard URL, you get a clean, always-on smart home display without relying on Google, Apple, or Amazon's proprietary smart displays. Setup involves sideloading the APK, configuring Home Assistant to trust the tablet's IP for passwordless access, disabling the lock screen and screen timeout, and using screen pinning to keep the app in the foreground. The result is a fully interactive dashboard with MQTT integration, allowing Home Assistant to use the tablet for TTS announcements and read its battery and temperature as sensors.
