# This Linux kernel patch could give the Steam Deck a surprising performance boost

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new Linux kernel patch called epp_boost modifies the AMD P-State driver to enable Energy Performance Preference (EPP) on busy CPU cores, improving boost behavior and CPU scaling. Benchmarks show up to 31% better 1%-low FPS in CPU-bound games on the Steam Deck, with Civilization VI cited as an example. The patch was developed by David Vernet, a Linux kernel hacker at Meta, specifically with gaming in mind. AMD engineers have not yet reviewed it, so a wider release may take time. The improvement is particularly relevant for Steam Deck owners given the device's aging hardware and Valve's recent price hike that reportedly caused an 82% drop in sales.
