# This mistake during a PC upgrade can fry your components, and it's surprisingly easy to make

## Summary

Mixing PSU cables between different power supply units is a dangerous mistake that can fry expensive components like GPUs, CPUs, and motherboards. Even though cables from different PSUs may look identical, their pinouts can differ, causing incorrect voltages to be delivered to components. The rise of modular PSUs has made this mistake easier to commit since cables are no longer permanently attached. The safest practice is to always use the cables bundled with a new PSU and discard old ones. Intel's ATX12VO standard aims to address cable standardization but has seen little adoption.
