This New Open Source Project Wants to Be the AI-First Alternative to Microsoft Office

GenOffice is a new open source, AI-first office suite built by a single developer at MainFunc.ai. It bundles four editors — Docs, Sheets, Slides, and PDF — into an Electron-based desktop app for Windows and macOS. AI features are powered by Genspark's Super Agent and draw from a credit system tied to an account. The spreadsheet engine uses the open source Univer library with a Rust sidecar, while PDF support is built on pdf.js and pdf-lib. A key privacy concern: text sent to AI features is passed to third-party providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and ElevenLabs. Linux support is not currently available and no timeline has been given.
