OpenAI has launched the Codex app, a desktop tool designed for orchestrating multiple AI coding agents across projects simultaneously. Built with Electron, it supports features like scheduled automations, Git worktrees, sandboxing, MCP server integration, and both local and remote agent execution. The app is positioned as a replacement for traditional IDEs when working with agentic AI workflows. Currently Mac-only, it has drawn criticism from Windows and Linux developers, though OpenAI says cross-platform support is coming once sandboxing challenges on Windows are resolved. Some Mac users are also unhappy about the Electron-based approach due to memory overhead.
