# Transmitting Analog Video Via Frikkin’ Laser Beams

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A hobbyist project called LYME 101 demonstrates transmitting live analog composite video through the air using a red laser diode. A Raspberry Pi generates the composite video signal, which modulates the laser via a 2N2222 NPN transistor. The receiver uses a BPW34 photodiode in reverse bias fed through an LM318N op-amp, with a dual 9V battery supply for clean power. The signal works with a CRT and, with some tuning via a terminator resistor and DC bias pot, also with a USB capture card.

## Questions this post answers

### How can I build a laser transmitter to send analog composite video signals through the air?

A Raspberry Pi generates a composite video signal that modulates a red laser diode via a 2N2222 NPN transistor and passive components. On the receiving end, a BPW34 photodiode, reverse-biased for faster response, feeds an LM318N op-amp to recover the signal. A pair of 9V batteries provides a noiseless dual +9V/-9V supply, and a terminator resistor plus DC bias pot help the signal work with a USB capture card.
