# Troubleshooting Video Delay On The Raspberry Pi

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

MattKC tracked down a persistent 3-frame video latency issue while building a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W-based clone of the WiiU gamepad's video receiver. The delay turned out to be time-based rather than frame-based, roughly 50ms, caused by the first decoded frame taking much longer (about 50ms) than subsequent frames (as little as 5ms). His code wasn't pulling frames from the decoder as soon as they were ready, so the initial lag carried through the whole pipeline. Polling the decoder more aggressively fixed the issue, letting the Pi Zero 2W match the responsiveness of the original WiiU gamepad.

## Questions this post answers

### Why does my video decoder pipeline on a Raspberry Pi have a fixed few-frame latency that won't go away?

The delay is often time-based rather than frame-count based. In one WiiU gamepad clone project on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, the first decoded frame took about 50 milliseconds while later frames took as little as 5 milliseconds, and code that didn't pull frames from the decoder as soon as they were ready let that initial lag carry forward through the whole pipeline. Polling the decoder promptly for completed frames resolved the stuck latency.
