X402 allows software to pay other software per-request using stablecoins — no accounts, API keys, or pre-registration needed. Originally created by Coinbase in May 2025 and later donated to the Linux Foundation, it now counts 40 members including Google, AWS, Cloudflare, Stripe, Visa, and Mastercard. AWS and Cloudflare have already deployed x402 integrations. The foundation joins two other recently launched Linux Foundation bodies — the Tokenomics Foundation (standardizing token cost measurement) and the Appia Foundation (verifiable AI safety/compliance claims) — forming a three-part governance stack covering cost, compliance, and payments for the emerging agentic economy.
