# TTM Memory Management For Graphics To Be More Aggresive With Linux 7.3

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Natalie Vock of Valve's Linux graphics team has developed improvements to TTM memory management and cgroup device memory (DMEMCG) code, set to land in Linux 7.3. The patches address a bug where device memory protection fails to prevent allocations from falling back to GTT when VRAM is scarce and multiple apps compete for video memory. The fix adds a special case for cgroup-protected allocations: instead of immediately backing off to GTT, TTM will now aggressively evict unprotected buffers to make room, ensuring protected apps get their full memory allocation without ping-ponging. The drm-misc-next pull also includes DMEMCG eviction support for AMDGPU and Xe drivers, Nouveau DMEMCG support, removal of a 64MB UDMABUF limit, and Allwinner Sun4i improvements for YUV and 4K.

## Questions this post answers

### Why do cgroup-protected applications still end up with GTT allocations instead of VRAM when memory is scarce on Linux?

When VRAM is scarce, unprotected applications fill VRAM before protected ones get a chance, causing TTM to back off and allocate in GTT instead. The existing eviction protection cannot prevent this because no eviction attempt is ever made — the back-off itself acts as an immediate eviction to GTT. The Linux 7.3 fix makes TTM actively evict unprotected buffers to free VRAM for protected allocations, preventing this fallback.

### Which GPU drivers will get DMEMCG eviction support in Linux 7.3?

DMEMCG eviction support is being enabled for the AMDGPU and Xe drivers in Linux 7.3. The Nouveau driver is also receiving DMEMCG support as part of the same patch series, authored by Natalie Vock of Valve's Linux graphics team.
