# Turning Fruits Into Ethylene And Ethane Refrigerant

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A DIY project by Hyperspace Pirate demonstrates producing ethylene and ethane refrigerants from fruit-derived ethanol. The process starts with fermenting fruit sugars into ethanol, then converting ethanol to ethylene using aluminium oxide catalyst at 350°C. Producing ethane is more complex, involving acetobacter bacteria to create acetic acid, plus a platinum anode and other components. The resulting gases can be used to fill refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners. Future work may extend to producing butene and longer hydrocarbon chains from ethylene.
