# UbiQD Wins New Mexico Grant for Quantum Light Source Development

**[The Quantum Insider](https://daily.dev/sources/thequantuminsider)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

UbiQD has received a $200,000 grant from New Mexico's Quantum Technologies Award to develop a quantum dot-based light source that emits single photons on demand at room temperature. The funding, from the Economic Development New Mexico Department's Technology and Innovation Office, will pay for optical equipment and device prototyping at UbiQD's Los Alamos headquarters. The work builds on a 2024-2025 partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory that produced some of the first detailed measurements of single-photon emission from UbiQD's cadmium-, lead- and mercury-free quantum dots. UbiQD holds 17 granted U.S. patents, 23 granted international patents and 27 pending applications, including one for a fiber-coupled broadband light source also granted in Korea, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany and France.

## Questions this post answers

### What problem does a room-temperature single-photon source solve for quantum computing?

Most quantum computers today rely on superconducting circuits cooled to near absolute zero in large refrigerators, while photon-based approaches need a light source that emits exactly one photon at a time, on demand, without that extreme cooling. Typical sources either emit multiple photons randomly, wasting output, or must themselves be cooled to near absolute zero, which is the gap UbiQD's quantum dot technology targets.

### What quantum dot materials is UbiQD using for single-photon emission instead of cadmium or lead-based dots?

UbiQD uses proprietary I-III-VI semiconductor quantum dots that are free of cadmium, lead, and mercury. A 2024-2025 partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory under the Technology Readiness Gross Receipts Initiative produced some of the first detailed measurements of single-photon emission from these specific materials.

### How large is UbiQD's patent portfolio around quantum dot technology?

UbiQD owns or exclusively licenses 17 granted U.S. patents and 23 granted international patents, with 27 applications pending. The portfolio spans foundational quantum dot material patents, processing into usable forms like films and concentrates, and end-use applications including security inks, agriculture, and solar, plus a fiber-coupled broadband light source patent also granted in Korea, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, and France.
