Ubuntu is rolling out an update to the tzdata package (version 2026c or newer) to handle upcoming time zone changes in Alberta, Canada and Morocco. Alberta will permanently stay on daylight saving time (UTC-6) starting November 1, 2026, while Morocco will revert to GMT+0 from September 20, 2026. The update ensures Ubuntu systems in or traveling to these regions automatically display the correct time without manual adjustment. It applies to all supported Ubuntu versions back to 16.04 LTS and will also reach Ubuntu-based distributions like Linux Mint, ZorinOS, and Pop!_OS. Having an incorrect system time can cause security issues, including problems accessing websites, repositories, and security features.
