# Ubuntu’s virtualization hardware enablement (HWE) stack: a new model for confidential computing enablement

## Summary

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS introduces a virtualization Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack that extends the existing kernel HWE model to cover QEMU, libvirt, OVMF firmware, and SeaBIOS. This opt-in rolling stack updates every six months within the LTS lifecycle, allowing users to access newer confidential computing features — such as AMD SEV-SNP and Intel TDX support, live migration, trusted device assignment, and accelerator enablement — without abandoning LTS stability or waiting for the next major release. The ubuntu_virt_helper tool helps manage the stack as a cohesive unit. The model targets regulated workloads, AI infrastructure, sovereign clouds, and financial services that need both long-term support and access to evolving hardware capabilities.
