A University of Michigan-led consortium called QuPID (Quantum Photonic Integration and Deployment) has received a $4 million NSF Phase 2 award under the National Quantum Virtual Laboratory program. Building on a prior $1M pilot, the team aims to develop plug-and-play quantum photonic chips for real-world applications like GPS-free navigation and advanced quantum measurement. Ohio State University researchers, including Nobel Laureate Pierre Agostini, are key partners. If successful, the project could advance to a Phase 3 NSF quantum center with up to $55 million in funding. Industry partners include Honeywell, General Motors, Toyota, Raytheon, and NASA Glenn Research Center.
