AWS has launched Kubernetes version rollbacks for Amazon EKS, allowing cluster administrators to reverse a Kubernetes version upgrade within seven days if issues arise post-upgrade. Unlike open-source Kubernetes, which has no control plane rollback support, EKS rollback returns the cluster to its previously validated production version—not an emulation. The feature supports rolling back one minor version at a time, includes pre-rollback readiness checks via cluster insights, and respects pod disruption budgets. For EKS Auto Mode clusters, both control plane and managed nodes are rolled back together, with a cancel API available to stop node rollbacks mid-process. The feature is available at no additional cost in all commercial AWS regions.
