According to an internal email, an FEC filings officer told campaign compliance firms on Monday night that an unauthorized party was trying to breach the agency's systems, and the FEC shut down its internet-facing services in response. The outage began around 10pm ET Monday, a week before the November 3 midterms, and has temporarily blocked political groups from submitting campaign finance reports. Voting itself is unaffected since the FEC doesn't administer elections.
