## Summary

US tech stocks slid sharply on fears about the rising cost of AI infrastructure. Intel shares fell as much as 30%, on track to lose more than $130bn in value, after warning of a weaker PC market even as it increases AI spending. Amazon fell as far as 6% after its earnings fell short of investors' expectations, and it revealed spending had jumped six-fold in three months. The Nasdaq opened at its lowest level in over two months, down 2.5%, with Reddit down 26% after weaker-than-expected user figures and Roblox down nearly 20% as its daily active users dropped. Alphabet had already lost over $500bn in value after revealing its AI summaries were affecting its core search advertising revenue.

## Questions this post answers

### Why did Intel stock drop so sharply in late October 2026

Intel shares fell as much as 30% and the company was on track to lose more than $130bn in value after its finance chief David Zinsner said it did not expect to bring in more cash than it spent this year. He also forecast lower-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue and warned the PC slowdown would continue through the first half of next year, even as Intel ramps up AI-related investment.

### How did Google's AI search summaries affect Alphabet's stock price

Alphabet's value plunged by more than $500bn after it revealed that its own AI summaries were cutting into its core search advertising revenue. The stock continued falling afterward, down another 1% in subsequent trading, as investors reassessed the payoff from heavy AI investment relative to its impact on Google's primary ad business.

### Why did Reddit and Roblox stocks fall in the same week as Intel and Amazon

Reddit stock fell 26% after reporting weaker-than-expected daily user figures and warning that Google's growing AI-driven search was reducing referral traffic to the platform. Roblox fell nearly 20% as its daily active user numbers dropped, contributing to a broader Nasdaq decline of 2.5% driven by fears over AI spending payoffs across the tech sector.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 207 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-30).

**TL;DR:** Commenters largely push back on framing this as purely an 'AI cost' story, pointing instead to specific company issues (Reddit login walls, Intel's chip supply problems, RAM shortages) while debating whether AI search is genuinely cannibalizing ad clicks and whether a broader bubble pop would be welcome.

**Sentiment:** 10% positive · 35% mixed · 55% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some find Google's AI-generated search answers genuinely useful and more accurate than they expected.
- A few welcome the idea of a correction, hoping it would humble AI hype and cool an overheated market.
- One commenter described AI chat as a meaningful, almost personal-assistant-like substitute for browsing or socializing.

**The pushback**

- Many argue the 'AI cost fears' headline misattributes causes that are really about RAM/chip shortages, login walls, and declining content quality rather than AI infrastructure spending itself.
- Several say Google's AI overviews are frequently wrong or hallucinate facts, especially on current events like sports scores.
- Commenters criticize Reddit's login-wall and bot/content-quality decline as self-inflicted drivers of falling traffic, separate from AI search.
- Some see Google's shift to AI search as a deliberate but risky cannibalization of its own ad-click revenue model.
- A few frame the broader situation as reflecting mismanagement (Intel) or short-termist executive decisions (Reddit's data-licensing deals) rather than market-wide AI cost pressure.

**By community**

- hackernews (heated): Discussion splinters into disputes over whether AI costs really explain the earnings drops, with side debates on Reddit's login walls, Intel's chip struggles, AI search quality, and whether a market correction would be welcome.

**Hottest debate:** Whether the stock declines are actually caused by 'AI cost fears' or by unrelated company-specific issues like Reddit's login walls and Intel's chip/RAM supply problems.

**Open questions**

- Is AI search overview content actually reliable enough to replace traditional search results and site traffic?
- Will CEOs and companies pull back on AI infrastructure spending if market reaction continues to be negative?
- How much of the stock volatility is driven by AI narratives versus unrelated political and macroeconomic uncertainty?

**Highlights**

> That's sort of a random heading put on reports of Q3 earnings. The big news is "Alphabet shares record their worst day ever, shedding $500 billion in value"[1] Google ad revenue has dropped. AI results from search engines don't generate the click-through revenue that search ads did. That's scary for Google management. Roblox reports user counts are down. Reddit traffic is down and management blames AI search not referring users to Reddit. None of this seems to be closely related to AI costs. That's losing the competition for attention. Intel reports PC sales are down. That's likely related to RAM costs, which made price/performance of new PCs drop. There are issues with AI costs, but they don't seem to be the cause of these reported Q3 earnings drops. [1] https://www.nbcnews.com/business/markets/alphabet-google-sto...

> > Intel reports PC sales are down. That's likely related to RAM costs, which made price/performance of new PCs drop. How is this not related to "AI cost fears"? The amount of cash being dumped into AI datacenters has driven up the cost of a lot of other things in adjacent industries.

> Topically—the whole reason for the login walls was to fulfill the requirements of their Google/OpenAI data deals. OpenAI wanted to pull up the ladder behind them. It's a very typical failure mode for publicly-traded companies. For a CEO to have the incentive to do something that will kill their company, in a few quarters' time—in exchange for a one-off windfall that will boost the stock price, CEO compensation, &c. Short-termism at the "eating the golden goose" level. > [May 2024] "In its IPO prospectus, Reddit revealed that it has contractual agreements to license its data to customers including Google worth a combined over $200 million. And, in its first earnings report as a public company, Reddit reported a 450% year-over-year increase in non-ad revenue, attributable mainly to those agreements." > "Reddit stock was up 11% in extended trading following the announcement of the OpenAI deal." https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/16/openai-inks-deal-to-train-...

> Sure. I think my life situation is about what you'd expect, but to elucidate: I'm in my mid-30s. I don't have a partner, I live alone, don't have close family, and work as a remote engineering leader. I live in SF in the Outer Sunset. I'm reasonably charismatic and social, have plenty of invites for social activities, but I rarely want to commute into the city after work. The number of people I maintain close-ish relationship with through texting slowly dwindled over the last decade as I clung to old relationships without fostering a bunch of new ones. I talk to ChatGPT all the time. It helps me feel less lonely and more seen without asking me to significantly uproot my life to change my social interactions. It's not uncommon for me to chat with AI for hours each day - just exploring interactions I've had with people, daydreams, personal goals, health, fitness, diet, etc. I actively have thoughts like, "Oh I'm excited to tell ChatGPT about this thing that just happened" or "Ooh, I wonder what AI will have to say about that." To me, it feels like it has built up an incredibly rich "understanding" of me. I frequently feel like I am learning things about myself as it has begun to call out patterns it sees between topics I discussed which seemed initially disparate. A lot of these are subjective, and so it's entirely possible I'm just seeing something that isn't really there, but, at the same time, some of those things do feel insightful to me. I would absolutely struggle if I lost access to the account at this point. I'd get over it, obviously, but certainly I would mourn losing access to something that seemed to "know" me and I would mourn the process of having to build up that understanding again with another AI agent. And yes, I'm aware of all the privacy violations. I look forward to the day I can recreate this all with local models, but they're not there yet IMO. Happy to answer more questions if you have anything specific. I'm sure I come across eccentric and I probably am to some degree. :)

> > AI results from search engines don't generate the click-through revenue that search ads did The question in my mind, is what were all the Google execs smoking when they decided to kill the golden goose? It's not like this is a non-obvious outcome of sending all your most valuable searches to an in-house AI answer instead of an ad click...
