Jeff Geerling demonstrates how to add FireWire (IEEE 1394) support to a Raspberry Pi 5 before Linux drops support in 2029. The process involves adding a Mini PCIe HAT with a FireWire adapter, recompiling the Linux kernel with FireWire support, and enabling the device tree overlay. FireWire 400 works out of the box after this setup, and video capture from a Canon GL1 camera is achieved using the DVgrab utility. Apple has already dropped FireWire in macOS 26, but Linux users have until 2029, and Windows 10/11 can still run older FireWire drivers.
