Using Microsoft Foundry Models with GitHub Copilot After the New Billing Model

GitHub Copilot introduced a new credit-based billing model in June 2026, replacing the previous request-based system. With 1 AI Credit = $0.01 and a Pro plan providing 1500 credits total, costs can rise quickly for agentic workflows. To offset this, the author demonstrates how to connect a custom LLM deployed on Microsoft Azure Foundry to GitHub Copilot via two methods: setting environment variables for the Copilot CLI, and using the Foundry Toolkit VS Code extension to add the model directly in the chat interface.
