# Vibe Coding Makes Seniors Faster. It Makes Juniors Hard to Hire.

## Summary

An interview protocol is proposed to address a hiring problem created by AI-assisted coding: candidates can ship working-looking features fast without understanding what their agent actually wrote, as illustrated by a candidate whose passing test silently asserted '200 or 429' instead of verifying correct behavior. The author argues that asking whether candidates use AI is pointless since everyone does, and instead proposes a 40-minute pairing interview with one laptop, no take-home, agent use allowed but a spec required, watching whether candidates catch and correct the agent when it gets something wrong. The piece includes a protocol, three behavioral tells to watch for, and retired interview questions.

## Content

Sat next to a candidate who shipped a feature in 20 minutes and couldn't explain why the 11th request still returned 200. The agent had written a test asserting `200 or 429`. Suite green, candidate calm.

**Vibe coding is a real speed — seniors who know what "done" looks like use it as a compressor; juniors who learned the compressor first have nothing to compress.** Not a moral, a hiring problem.

So: stop asking "do you use AI" (everyone does, sorts nobody). 40-minute pairing protocol, one laptop, no take-home. **Agent allowed. Spec required. Timer is the interview.** Watch who reaches for the spec when the agent gets the test wrong.

Protocol, three tells, retired questions, and a team version. 🔗

> The `200 or 429` test is the perfect artefact for this — it's not incompetence, it's an agent satisfying "write a test for this" at the shape level while asserting nothing about behaviour. You only catch it if you read the assertion, not the checkmark.

> For anyone interviewing right now: are you banning agents, allowing them, or ignoring the question? Banning tests a workflow nobody uses, but allowing them requires you to actually change what you're scoring.
