# Voyager 1 Briefly Goes Silent, Scaring Everyone

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Voyager 1 went silent for more than 24 hours on October 18 and 19, and the team is still trying to figure out what happened. Diagnostic data collected after communications were restored showed a group of thrusters went offline, with backup units kicking in. This indicates the onboard computer detected some kind of anomaly, and whether it is a recurrence of previously observed clogged fuel lines will have to be investigated. It is currently unknown whether the blackout is related to a recent switch of multiple instruments to lower-power versions, which should give both spacecraft a few more years before power reserves fall below usable levels.

## Questions this post answers

### Why did Voyager 1 stop communicating with NASA in October 2026?

Voyager 1 went silent for more than 24 hours on October 18 and 19 after a group of thrusters went offline and backup units automatically took over. Diagnostic data retrieved once communications resumed showed the onboard computer detected an anomaly with the primary thrusters, possibly a recurrence of previously observed clogged fuel lines. The exact cause is still under investigation.
