## Summary

VXLAN-to-VXLAN bridging solves two key problems when extending VXLAN/EVPN across WAN links in DCI environments: excessive ingress replication flooding WAN bandwidth, and ASIC limits on VXLAN neighbor and replication list entries. WAN edge switches act as VTEP boundaries for both LAN and WAN domains, receiving a single flooded copy and forwarding it appropriately. This requires split-horizon forwarding and flooding based on source IP, not VNI. For years only Cisco's Cloud Scale ASIC supported this, but Arista solved it on Broadcom Jericho, and the 2022 EANTC test report confirms it also works on Juniper QFX10K and Nokia 7750 SR-1.

## Questions this post answers

### Which ASICs or platforms support VXLAN-to-VXLAN bridging for multi-site DCI?

Cisco's Cloud Scale ASIC was long the only option for VXLAN-to-VXLAN bridging. Arista later implemented it on the Broadcom Jericho chipset, and the 2022 EANTC interoperability test report confirmed the feature also works on Juniper QFX10K and Nokia 7750 SR-1. Split-horizon forwarding and flooding based on source IP address — not VNI — are required from the switching ASIC.

### Why does VXLAN ingress replication cause problems over WAN links in multi-site deployments?

With ingress replication, every ToR switch sends a separate copy of each flooded packet to every remote ToR switch across the WAN link. This multiplies WAN bandwidth consumption proportionally to the number of remote VTEPs. Switching ASICs also impose hard limits — typically 256 VXLAN neighbors and 128 ingress replication list entries — which can be exhausted in large multi-site deployments.
