**[Engineering Leadership](https://daily.dev/sources/engineeringleadership)** · [@petarivanovv9](https://daily.dev/petarivanovv9) · 1285 upvotes · 78 comments

## Summary

The concept of the T-Shaped Developer, who has both deep expertise in one area and a broad understanding of various other areas, is increasingly sought after in software companies. Unlike generalists, who have broad but shallow knowledge, or specialists, who have deep but narrow expertise, T-Shaped Developers combine the strengths of both. These developers can adapt and deliver diverse tasks while solving complex problems. Becoming a T-Shaped Developer involves expanding your skills both horizontally and vertically, making you highly valuable and versatile in the job market.

> Literally everyone I know in the field is T-shaped or rather M-W-shaped. You can't be in IT and have no clue whatsoever about technologies other than the one you specialize in, and unless you're a junior you *have* to specialize in at least one technology. This is re-baptising the wheel, so to speak. Inventing cool-sounding titles for what has been there since forever.
