Waymo has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 3,800 robotaxis in the U.S. after software issues allowed vehicles to drive onto flooded roadways. The recall covers vehicles using Waymo's fifth and sixth generation automated driving systems. The issue came to a head after a Waymo vehicle in San Antonio drove into a flooded road and was swept into a creek on April 20, triggering an NHTSA probe. Waymo has implemented temporary mitigations restricting operations during extreme weather and is developing additional software safeguards. The company's San Antonio service remains suspended while it prepares to resume public rides.
