Most software engineers now use AI for most of their code and fear the existential threat

A survey of 7,258 web developers reveals a dramatic shift in AI adoption: 63% now use AI to generate more than half their code, up from a minority in early 2025, and 27% use it for 90%+ of their code. Despite this, nearly half worry about job displacement, with concerns that employers may be convinced AI can replace developers even if it can't. ChatGPT (88.4%) and Claude (82.1%) are the most-used model providers, though Claude leads in paid subscriptions. Key technical complaints include hallucinations (64%), poor code quality (53%), and lack of context (38%). The picture is contradictory: 74% call AI tools integral to their workflow and 64% feel more productive, yet strong reservations about AI's broader societal impact persist.

As someone who builds websites, AI feels more like a faster teammate than a replacement. The bigger skill now is knowing what to keep, what to fix, and when not to trust the output.

AI is not the issue, misuse of AI is.

It’s never been devs, it’s always the disconnect between managers and their job (goals). Devs are treated as a resource instead of the authority on problem solving. So of course if we can use AI to replace that resource its great. Until it isn’t.

So i don’t know i don’t see my customers doing my Job with AI. They call me to help them and do the Job but know i can get a faster result.
