Shopify online stores now expose WebMCP tools that AI agents can call directly in the browser. Agents can search product catalogs, manage shopping carts, and proceed to checkout on behalf of shoppers — all within the active browser tab. The tools are built on WebMCP, a proposed web standard letting pages register tools with the browser, eliminating the need for agents to parse page code or simulate clicks. They are live on all Liquid storefronts and the Hydrogen developer preview with no setup required. Cart interactions use the same storefront actions as apps, so theme behaviors like cart drawers still trigger. WebMCP is currently available in Chromium-based browsers via an origin trial, with Shopify contributing to the spec alongside Google and Microsoft.
