# Welcoming the Josh Project to the Rust Innovation Lab

**[Rust Foundation](https://daily.dev/sources/rustfoundation)** · 4 min read · 6 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

The Rust Foundation's Rust Innovation Lab has welcomed Josh, a Rust-based tool that transforms Git history to let any part of a repository be treated as its own independent repo with full history. The Rust Project already uses Josh to sync Miri, Rust Analyzer, compiler-builtins, stdarch, and the Rust Compiler Development Guide, replacing a git subtree workflow that had become too slow at scale. Josh ships a CLI and josh-proxy, is MIT licensed, and is maintained by Christian Schilling, Vladislav Ivanov, and Marc Wallner, with a merge queue and containerized build orchestrator in progress.

## Questions this post answers

### What does the Josh tool do for managing Git repositories across multiple projects?

Josh is a Rust-based platform that performs fast, reversible transformation of Git history, letting any part of a repository be presented as its own independent repository with full history and the ability to contribute changes back. It ships two components: a josh CLI for local partial projections and josh-proxy, a Git HTTP/SSH proxy that transforms history on the fly from a shared cache.

_Teams weighing monorepo versus multi-repo tradeoffs can find more Git tooling coverage on daily.dev._

### Why did the Rust Project stop using git subtree for syncing Miri and Rust Analyzer?

Git subtree became unusably slow at the Rust Project's scale, with Miri syncs sometimes never finishing at all. The project switched to Josh for subtree synchronization of Miri, Rust Analyzer, compiler-builtins, stdarch, and the Rust Compiler Development Guide, with plans to migrate its remaining subtrees to Josh as well.

_Developers hitting scaling walls with git subtree can track alternative tooling approaches on daily.dev._

### Who maintains the Josh project and what license is it released under?

Josh is maintained by Christian Schilling along with Vladislav Ivanov and Marc Wallner, and is licensed under the MIT license, keeping the code freely available. The project recently joined the Rust Foundation's Rust Innovation Lab as a board-approved fiscally sponsored project for a stable long-term home.

> ran subtree on a monorepo for a couple years before it hit a wall, the slowdown isn't gradual it just falls off a cliff past a certain history size. would be curious how josh holds up once you're past rust-lang's scale, that's usually where these tools get tested for real.
