# Weston 13.0 release: Backends consolidation

**[Collabora Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/collabora)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Weston 13.0 introduces the ability to load multiple backends simultaneously, enabling VNC, RDP, or PipeWire backends to run alongside the native DRM backend for remote access. Multiple overlapping outputs are now supported, allowing a DRM output to be streamed remotely via PipeWire while maintaining the most efficient display path. The gl-renderer received optimizations including improved vertex clipping and GPU profiling accuracy. A new `require-outputs` configuration option controls how Weston handles failed output enable attempts. The launcher-logind module was removed (deprecated since Weston 12), and users of backend-vnc must upgrade to Neat VNC 0.7.0. On the API side, `weston_view_move_to_layer()` simplifies shell and window manager development, and the `weston_coord` coordinate representation has been extended to more libweston objects. The screen-share module and fullscreen-shell are being planned for retirement in favor of kiosk-shell.

## Questions this post answers

### What changed in Weston 13.0 regarding loading multiple backends?

Weston 13.0 adds the ability to load multiple backends simultaneously. You can now start Weston with a primary DRM backend and a secondary backend such as VNC, RDP, PipeWire, or nested Wayland/X11 in a single command, for example: `weston -B drm, rdp`. This also enables multiple overlapping outputs, so a DRM output can be streamed remotely via PipeWire while still taking the most efficient display path.

_Developers building Wayland compositors or embedded display stacks track Weston releases like this on daily.dev._

### What does the new require-outputs config option do in Weston 13?

The `require-outputs` option, added under the `[core]` section of Weston's ini file, controls behavior when outputs fail to enable. Set to `all-found`, Weston requires all discovered outputs to be enabled before starting. Set to `any`, it starts if at least one output is enabled. Set to `none`, Weston starts even if no outputs were enabled at all.

_Embedded Linux engineers configuring headless or multi-output Weston setups find relevant release details on daily.dev._

### Is launcher-logind still available in Weston 13?

No, launcher-logind was removed entirely in Weston 13.0. It had been deprecated in the previous Weston 12 release, and this version completes its removal.

_Wayland compositor maintainers upgrading from older Weston versions can follow breaking changes like this on daily.dev._
