# What happens after the developer clicks deploy?

## Summary

Platform engineering discussions often focus on developer-facing features like self-service portals and golden paths, but the harder problems emerge after a deployment is triggered. A mature internal developer platform (IDP) must answer questions about service ownership, environment classification, observability integration, drift detection, policy enforcement, and workload promotion across environments. Backstage can serve as the unified interface while Kubernetes and cloud-native tooling handle the underlying concerns. An upcoming session featuring Kelsey Hightower and OpenChoreo maintainers will explore what it practically takes to build such a platform beyond just wrapping infrastructure in a portal.

## Content

A lot of internal developer platform discussions focus on the developer-facing part:

self-service, golden paths, Backstage, service creation, environment provisioning and deployments.

But I think the more interesting platform engineering problem starts **after the developer clicks deploy**.

Does the platform know:

- who owns that service?
- which environment is production?
- where its logs, metrics and traces are?
- which Kubernetes events belong to that workload?
- whether the running state has drifted from the desired state?
- which deployment and security policies should apply?
- how that workload should move between environments?

You can give developers access to Kubernetes, Grafana, Argo, CI/CD systems and a bunch of other tools individually.

But connecting those tools into a consistent platform experience is a completely different problem.

That’s where something like Backstage becomes the interface, while Kubernetes and the wider cloud-native ecosystem handle deployment, reconciliation, observability and policy behind it.

On August 27, Kelsey Hightower and the OpenChoreo maintainers are doing a practical session around exactly this: **what it actually takes to build an internal developer platform with Backstage and Kubernetes**, beyond just putting a portal in front of your infrastructure.

We’ll be looking at deployments, environments, observability, policies, reconciliation and how all of those pieces connect behind the developer experience.

Curious what others think:

**When building an IDP, what capability absolutely needs to be part of the platform from day one?**
