AWS regions contain multiple physically separate availability zones to protect against localized disasters. For databases like RDS, setting up multi-AZ and cross-region read replicas ensures failover if a primary goes down. Web applications should similarly be distributed across regions. At minimum, nightly backups should be in place so data can be restored elsewhere. Infrastructure as code makes spinning up in a new region much faster.
