# What I Wish I Knew Before Learning React

## Summary

A reflective beginner's guide sharing lessons learned while learning React, emphasizing that solid JavaScript fundamentals matter more than memorizing React syntax. Covers understanding components as functions, learning why hooks exist rather than memorizing them, grasping state and one-way data flow, keeping folder structure simple early on, building real projects instead of just watching tutorials, embracing errors as part of learning, using React DevTools, and pacing exposure to the broader React ecosystem (Router, Redux, Next.js, Server Components).

## Content

When I first started learning React, I thought it was just another JavaScript library with a few extra rules. I believed that once I memorized hooks like `useState` and `useEffect`, I'd be able to build anything.

I was wrong.

Looking back, there are several things I wish someone had told me before I opened my first React tutorial. If you're just getting started, these lessons might save you weeks—or even months—of confusion.

# 1. JavaScript Is More Important Than React

This is the biggest lesson I learned.

Many beginners jump straight into React without having a solid understanding of JavaScript. React doesn't replace JavaScript—it builds on top of it.

Before learning React, make sure you're comfortable with:

- ES6+ syntax
- Arrow functions
- Array methods (`map`, `filter`, `reduce`)
- Destructuring
- Spread and rest operators
- Objects and arrays
- Promises
- Async/Await
- Modules (`import` and `export`)

When you understand JavaScript well, React suddenly feels much easier.

# 2. Components Are Just Functions

At first, React components looked magical.

```
function Button() {
  return <button>Click Me</button>;
}
```

Eventually, I realized they're simply JavaScript functions that return UI.

Once that clicked, React became much less intimidating.

Think of components as reusable building blocks. Instead of writing the same HTML over and over again, you create one component and reuse it wherever you need.

# 3. Don't Memorize Hooks—Understand Why They Exist

I spent hours trying to memorize every hook.

Instead, I should have focused on the problem each hook solves.

For example:

- `useState` stores data.
- `useEffect` handles side effects.
- `useRef` stores values without causing re-renders.
- `useMemo` optimizes expensive calculations.

Learning _why_ they're needed is far more valuable than memorizing their syntax.

# 4. State Is the Heart of React

React becomes powerful because of state.

A beginner mistake is trying to manipulate the DOM directly.

```
document.getElementById("title")
```

In React, you don't manually update the UI.

Instead, you update the state.

```
setCount(count + 1);
```

React automatically updates the interface.

Once I understood this, everything started making sense.

# 5. Props Only Flow One Way

This confused me for a long time.

Data flows from parent components to child components.

```
Parent
   ↓
Child
   ↓
Grandchild
```

Children don't directly change their parent's data.

Instead, parents pass functions as props.

Understanding one-way data flow makes debugging much easier.

# 6. Folder Structure Doesn't Matter at First

I wasted days trying to copy complicated folder structures from YouTube videos.

You don't need dozens of folders when you're learning.

A simple project structure is enough:

```
src/
 ├── components/
 ├── pages/
 ├── assets/
 ├── App.jsx
 └── main.jsx
```

Keep things simple until your projects grow.

# 7. Build Projects Early

Watching tutorials feels productive.

It isn't.

The real learning starts when you build something yourself.

Good beginner projects include:

- To-Do App
- Weather App
- Notes App
- Calculator
- Expense Tracker
- Movie Search App

Every project teaches something new.

# 8. You'll Make Lots of Errors

One missing bracket.

One incorrect import.

One forgotten `export default`.

React can throw long error messages that look terrifying.

Don't panic.

Almost every React developer spends a surprising amount of time fixing small mistakes.

Learning to read error messages is one of the most valuable skills you can develop.

# 9. Learn React DevTools

React DevTools is one of the best debugging tools available.

It lets you:

- Inspect components
- View props
- Track state
- Find unnecessary re-renders

Using DevTools early can save hours of debugging.

# 10. React Keeps Evolving

The React ecosystem changes quickly.

Over time, you'll hear about:

- React Router
- Context API
- Redux
- Zustand
- Next.js
- Server Components
- Suspense

Don't try to learn everything at once.

Master the fundamentals first.

The advanced topics will make much more sense later.

# Final Thoughts

React isn't difficult because of its syntax.

It's difficult because it teaches a different way of thinking about building user interfaces.

Once you understand components, state, props, and JavaScript fundamentals, everything else becomes much easier.

If I could give one piece of advice to every beginner, it would be this:

**Stop chasing every new framework or library. Learn JavaScript well, build small projects consistently, and let React become a tool—not the goal.**

Your first project won't be perfect.

Your tenth project won't be perfect either.

But each project will teach you something new, and one day you'll look back and realize how far you've come.

Happy coding! 🚀
