# What Inference Provider Lock-In Actually Looks Like in Production

## Summary

'OpenAI-compatible' APIs standardize only the transport layer, not the behavioral calibration that production systems depend on. Lock-in accumulates across six surfaces: prompt calibration (tuned to a specific model's tendencies), output format assumptions (JSON mode guarantees and tool-call argument formats differ significantly between OpenAI, Anthropic, Together, and Fireworks), error handling and retry logic (error taxonomies and HTTP status codes are not aligned across providers), caching architecture (Anthropic uses explicit breakpoints with write premiums, OpenAI caches automatically, Google adds storage fees), cost optimization (tokenizer differences, invisible reasoning tokens, and output token premiums make sticker-price comparisons misleading), and operational tooling (dashboards, observability integrations, billing exports). Contractual terms matter less than behavioral calibration — some providers marketed as lock-in-free publish fewer deprecation and price-change commitments than OpenAI or Anthropic. The highest-leverage investment against lock-in is an automated, provider-agnostic eval suite, not an abstraction layer. Open-weights models offer structural portability since behavioral calibration travels with the model. Accepting lock-in is often the right call for early-stage teams, frontier-model-dependent workloads, or when provider-specific optimizations deliver clear savings.
