Mistral AI is a French AI company founded in 2023 by former DeepMind and Meta researchers, pursuing a strategy closer to Palantir than OpenAI — deploying models and agent platforms for governments and large enterprises via forward-deployed engineers. Its chat product Vibe (formerly Le Chat) has limited consumer traction, but the company has grown ARR from $20M to over $400M in a year and is targeting $1B ARR. Mistral has raised roughly $4B total, with a rumored new round at a $23B+ valuation. It has acquired infrastructure startup Koyeb and physics AI startup Emmi, announced a €4B data center investment in France and Sweden, and secured partnerships with Microsoft, NVIDIA, IBM, Accenture, and several European governments. CEO Arthur Mensch has positioned the company as a sovereignty-focused alternative to U.S. AI labs, with an open-weight model expected in summer 2026 and an IPO as the long-term exit plan.
