# What Made Anthropic To Build Their Own Git - Scion?

## Summary

Anthropic built a custom version control system called Scion to replace Git in its monorepo, driven by a surge from roughly 2,500 to over 30,000 daily merged changes by September, largely from AI agents and CI jobs operating as always-online clients rather than Git's offline-first model. Scion keeps code server-side, lets users fetch only needed files, and commits directly on the server without pushes. Anthropic reports roughly 200x less CPU and memory usage versus the old mirroring setup and checkout times dropping from minutes to seconds.

## Content

The funny thing is, they migrated off Git and used Claude to build their own version control system, Scion.

**But Why?**

Anthropic reports more than 30,000 daily merged changes by September, up from roughly 2,500 in May. The company moved the monorepo from Git to Scion after source control became the bottleneck.

Basically, Git was designed for developers who keep a full copy of the repository and sometimes work offline. But today, many users are AI agents and CI jobs that are always online. That’s why Anthropic built Scion, where code stays on a server, users download only the files they need, and commits happen directly on the server without requiring a push. Hmmm, interesting.

As according [their article](https://www.anthropic.com/engineering/redesigning-source-control), Scion uses roughly 200x less CPU and memory than the old mirroring setup, and checkouts went from minutes to seconds.

Man, how things are rapidly changing in the world of software today is just overwhelming to me.

> That's an interesting approach to viewing git. I wonder what is the affect of it on context windows and tokens for the models overall.

> This was inevitable once AI agents took over CI/CD loops. Git was designed for human developers working locally and offline, but thousands of cloud agents constantly spinning up, pulling massive monorepos, and pushing 30k+ changes a day completely overwhelms standard Git tooling. Shifting back to a centralized, sparse checkout model like Scion is the only practical way to handle that kind of throughput.

> Yes, that’s predictable. Github has also reported problems caused by Al agents.

> We need tools designed for Al agents instead of forcing them to act like humans. Poor design can lead to legal/ethical problems (e.g. Meta's agent agreed to sell an item without human approval🤯). Tools should prevent such actions. Humans must remain responsible for the results. Al should help humans make decisions, not replace them
