# What's New in Data API builder (DAB) 2.0 | Data Exposed

## Summary

Data API Builder (DAB) 2.0 is an open-source Microsoft project that acts as a drop-in container between your application and database, auto-generating REST, GraphQL, and now MCP endpoints directly from SQL databases. Version 2.0 adds Redis caching, On-Behalf-Of (OBO) authentication, Azure Key Vault integration, compound REST paths, and MCP support for agentic AI applications. Configuration is done via a single JSON file, and a VS Code extension (Omnibus) simplifies setup. DAB supports Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Cosmos DB simultaneously, includes row-level security policies at the API layer, and is used internally by Microsoft Fabric and other products.

## Questions this post answers

### What new features are in Data API Builder (DAB) 2.0?

Data API Builder 2.0 adds MCP server capability for agentic apps to query SQL directly, Redis caching support, an on-behalf-of (OBO) authentication method for passing credentials, Azure Key Vault integration, compound paths for REST endpoints, and the ability to add descriptions to table columns that get passed as semantic data to AI models. It can expose REST, GraphQL, and MCP simultaneously from one container.

_Developers tracking new ways to expose databases to AI agents can follow Data API Builder updates on daily.dev._

### Can Data API Builder expose a database as an MCP server for AI agents?

Yes, since version 2.0, Data API Builder can enable an MCP endpoint alongside REST and GraphQL from the same deployed container, letting agentic applications wrapped around a model query a SQL database directly. Column descriptions defined in the config are passed along as semantic data to help the model understand the schema.

_Anyone building agent-to-database integrations can keep up with MCP tooling changes on daily.dev._

### What databases does Data API Builder support?

Data API Builder connects to Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Cosmos DB, and it can connect to multiple databases simultaneously, including a mix of on-premises and cloud instances, all configured through a single JSON file that defines connection strings and the tables, views, and stored procedures to expose.

_Teams comparing database-to-API tooling options can track this space on daily.dev._
