Microsoft is introducing WSL Containers, a new feature for Windows Subsystem for Linux that enables running Linux containers natively on Windows without third-party tools. The feature includes a CLI tool called WSLC (also aliased as 'container'), a NuGet API package for embedding container management in Windows applications, and enterprise management support via Intune and MDE. Containers get GPU access for AI workloads, VirtioFS-based file sharing between Windows and Linux, and per-application isolated VHDs for storage. A live demo showed building custom images, port mapping, GPU-accelerated PyTorch fine-tuning inside a container, and running a Linux rendering engine (Moonray) transparently as a Windows EXE via the API. Public preview is planned by end of June. Azure Linux 4.0 (the same distro powering AKS) is also now available as a WSL distro.
