# What software architecture unexpectedly taught me about enterprise design

**[Medium](https://daily.dev/sources/medium_js)** · 7 min read · 96 upvotes · 4 comments

## Summary

Reflecting on parallel experiences designing a healthcare platform and a pharma ERP system, the author argues that great enterprise design begins not with screens but with understanding the underlying business objects, relationships, and dependencies. Drawing an analogy from software architecture, the piece contends that interfaces should emerge as a natural consequence of modeling how a business is structured, and that AI increases the stakes of getting this domain modeling right since it amplifies whatever structural understanding (or misunderstanding) already exists.

> The part about users not waking up thinking “I need to visit Screen 14” really hit the point for me. We can get so focused on building pages and features that we forget the software is supposed to represent something that already exists in the real world. Understanding the business first makes the actual design decisions a lot easier.

> This is why DDD matters so much in enterprise systems—the real complexity lives in relationships and business rules.
