WhatsApp is rolling out a username feature that lets users hide their phone numbers from people not in their contact list. Users can reserve a username now via Settings > Account > Username, ahead of the full launch later this year. An optional username key adds an extra layer of control, requiring others to know the key before messaging you. There is no public directory — people must know your exact username to contact you. Some usernames are reserved for governments, public figures, and businesses. Signal has offered a similar feature since February 2024.
