Neon's storage-compute separation architecture allows their primary compute to scale CPU/memory automatically, while ephemeral read replicas handle read traffic during peaks and scale to zero when idle. This approach replaced a rigid, over-provisioned setup and eliminated the opaque pricing concerns they had with Amazon Aurora Serverless.
