# Why Book Corners won't sync contributions back to OpenStreetMap

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

The developer behind Book Corners, an app for discovering public bookcases, explains why they decided not to implement a feature that would sync user-submitted library locations back to OpenStreetMap. What initially seemed like a straightforward API integration turned out to require a formal OSM import programme: a dedicated account, a published import plan, community consultation, licensing clarity, duplicate handling, and ongoing operational responsibility. Weighing the overhead against the low volume of contributions and the opportunity cost of not improving core features, the author chose to suspend the write-back implementation indefinitely. The post reflects on how external integrations carry organisational and social contracts that can outweigh the technical effort.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 59 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-08-03).

**TL;DR:** The community is broadly sympathetic to OSM's data-quality gatekeeping but frustrated by how it blocks useful contributions like bulk book-corner data; many see OSM's strength in road networks and background layers rather than live POI data, and a side debate erupts over whether the article itself was LLM-written.

**Sentiment:** 20% positive · 50% mixed · 30% skeptical

**The case for**

- OSM's road network data is very high quality and freely available, which is genuinely remarkable.
- Individual contributions via apps like StreetComplete, EveryDoor, and CoMaps are easy and effective for casual users.
- OSM's import barriers prevent spam, duplicates, and incorrectly licensed data from degrading the dataset.
- The OSM Notes API and MapRoulette offer lighter-weight paths to signal new data without a full import process.

**The pushback**

- OSM POI data (hours, local cafes, etc.) is often incomplete or out of date compared to Google Maps, limiting its usefulness as a city map.
- The import review process is so burdensome that genuinely useful datasets like Book Corners get blocked entirely.
- There is no well-accepted, streamlined way to contribute geospatial overlay/signal data against OSM IDs without maintaining a separate DB.
- The article itself is suspected by multiple commenters to be LLM-generated, undermining trust in the narrative.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Commenters appreciate OSM's quality principles but are divided on whether its import barriers are too rigid, and a notable sub-thread debates whether the article was AI-written.

**Hottest debate:** Whether OSM's strict import requirements protect data quality or unnecessarily block valuable community datasets like Book Corners.

**Open questions**

- Is there a lightweight 'signals' layer OSM could accept that sits below the bar of a full import?
- Why isn't the Little Free Library project's own map the canonical place to log these locations?
- Could a direct-submission app model (users submit to OSM in real time) sidestep the bulk-import rules entirely?

**Highlights**

> > you can make an OSM account, go to the website, click, add a thing, hit submit, done. Someone will review it. I will share an unpopular opinion: thil will only make a freeworkforce for those projects who profit from using OSM. And the OSM has surprisingly unreliable data quality for walking around even in the popular tourist places like Tokyo or Kyoto, or New York. I've tried, and it's so worse than GMaps (or Bing) to being completely unusable. No work hours of Starbucks, no local dining cafe, no menu contributions. It's great for the trail and hike outdiors, sure. But that's very different from the city map, as the nature featutes rarely change, not like city POIs.

> This is partially because they import into their own system, and then export->import into OSM. At that point, they're considered an integration which imports data. If their apps instead submitted directly to OSM (letting submission trickle back down), then the flow would fit into "user submission". Book Corners simply becomes an app though which the user performed the submission, rather than an intermediary exporting data.

> OSM needs a way to ingest "signals" instead of edits.

> Come on, the LLM language is all over the article: > The workflow I had in mind was deliberately cautious > The code was not the difficult part. > These requirements are not a one-time form to complete and forget. They create an ongoing responsibility around the account, the documented process, community feedback, failures, and potential reversions. Just a few examples. And yes, Pangram 4 also flags it as 100% LLM written. I don't mind being downvoted or flagged, but I think more people should be aware of the LLM style, even if they're ok with it being used without any disclaimer. It's honestly sad that nowadays people on HN cannot recognize this style.

> This is trivial to navigate. Use the notes API to post the likely presence of a public bookcase with details (link to image, description, etc); and the community will slowly ingest the contributions. Or set up a maproulette challenge with much the same detail. Or just a geojson dump under an ODBL licence and share with with relevant communities. The third one or something very like it is required if you have mixed ODBL with non ODBL content.

> I still think this feels a bit unfair. If Book Corners is taking data from OpenStreetMap, I think it should try a little harder to give something small back, especially when the contributions are already being reviewed. I understand there are rules and overhead, but the spirit of reciprocity still matters.
