GitHub remains dominant by the numbers, but a growing number of open source projects are migrating away due to concerns over frequent downtime, Microsoft's ownership, AI training on code, and political direction. High-profile departures include Ghostty (a terminal emulator), Tenacity (an audio editor), the Dillo browser, and the Hare programming language. Alternatives gaining traction include Codeberg (powered by Forgejo), Sourcehut, Gitea, and self-hosted forges. The Software Freedom Conservancy also runs an active campaign encouraging developers to leave GitHub.

Personally I use Gitea due to its lightweight nature and customizability. I have a private Gitea instance at home and a cluster of build agents of different platforms to do cross-platform CI pipelines and it runs way faster than GitHub actions does and offline. I use a public Gitea instance as an alternative to Docker Hub for distributing releases and controlling who can access those releases and it works quite well too.

I use both Gitlab and Gitea. I’ve migrated my code from Github to Gitlab the moment Microsoft took over Github. Later on I added my self hosted Gitea for more private projects, and also for it’s simplicity.

I still surprising why ppl need anything else except GitLab. It can do everything what it’s alternatives do, maybe not that straight easy way, but it’s canonical tool.
But I do use GitHub for one thing - publishing my CV.
