AWS has launched FinOps Agent into public preview, its third specialized 'frontier agent' for IT operations. The agent automates cloud cost investigation by correlating cost anomalies from AWS Cost Anomaly Detection with CloudTrail activity logs to identify root causes and responsible owners. It answers natural-language questions about spending by pulling from Cost Explorer, Cost Optimization Hub, and Compute Optimizer, and can automatically open Jira tickets or post Slack notifications. The agent operates with a mostly read-only IAM permission model, with write access limited only to managing its own EventBridge scheduling rules. It also supports scheduled cost reports and bundles optimization recommendations into actionable Jira tickets. Currently available only in US East (N. Virginia) during preview, it's free to use within monthly limits. Early adopters include Workday, Mitre 10, Convera, and AVIV Group, each citing different pain points around cost visibility and anomaly routing.
