Without versioning, deploying code changes to running workflows causes non-deterministic errors — the worker reconstructs workflow state using updated code that conflicts with the existing event history. For example, reordering activities (e.g., charging a customer before shipping) breaks in-progress executions because the event history records the original order. Versioning solves this by allowing workflow code to safely evolve without breaking compatibility for executions already in progress.
