Picking the stack the job actually runs on is not a compromise, it is what lets you learn the things that transfer - concurrency, data modelling, how a request dies - which are the same in PHP and Java and stay useful when both are unfashionable. The awkward open question in the beginner-tasks prediction is where the foundational knowledge is supposed to come from once the routine work is gone, since that work was the apprenticeship.
